MeWe is made of those who value a gamified experience, meet Jacob!

What inspired you to join MeWe?
It was January 2021. I was tired of big tech social networks censoring people for merely expressing frustrations and skepticisms online, so I started looking for alternatives. First was Parler, which was initially pretty solid, but after it was removed from the app stores, it just wasn’t the same. Next was Gab, followed by MeWe. I used Gab the most in 2021, but gradually moved away because I was sick of the constant chaos and lack of civility in the community. MeWe, with its relaxed moderation, seemed more ideal to me because I was able to speak my mind without self-censorship, yet I didn’t have to worry about constantly running into jerks who are only there to cause chaos and prevent civil discussion. That was also about the time where I started taking my privacy seriously, which just further solidified my interest in MeWe.

What keeps you active on the MeWe app?
Well, privacy and freedom of expression were the main aspects that kept me here. As I started really digging into MeWe during 2022, I learned that we have the best community of any major social network, bar none. I found so many great groups, made many good friends. When MeWe doubled down on its goal of privacy and freedom of expression under Carlos (the new CEO), that made me double down on MeWe, which I already passionately supported.

If you could describe your ideal community in three words, what would they be?
Friendly, mature, like-minded

If you could describe yourself in three words what would they be?
Dreamer, introspective, stubborn

What do you love most about MeWe compared to other platforms?
I touched on some of this earlier but if I could summarize it into a single reason… I’d say I love MeWe because it feels like the closest I can get to experiencing the old internet again. As a millennial, I grew up with an internet that looked drastically different than it does today. Back then, there were countless websites, forums, chatrooms and so forth. Back then, it was mostly just people gathering together to chat about stuff they’re passionate about. Modern social media, with their algorithms and echo chambers, feel more like a dystopian prison of fakery to me. MeWe does it differently: I see people of all walks of life, chatting and hanging out, not bothering with self-censorship, views or anything else. Just human connection. It’s not perfect, but it’s way more in line with what I personally loved about my early internet experiences.

Who or what inspires the content you share, and why?
Generally speaking, I share content that I enjoy or think others will find useful. Whether that’s a quality meme that I genuinely laughed at, or an important video, or a song I love, that’s what keeps me going. I don’t always get that much engagement but engagement isn’t important to me; I just enjoy sharing good, organic content that I feel like talking about.

What’s one tip or trick you’d give to someone who’s just getting started on MeWe?
If you’re someone who wants a public presence, don’t treat it as an influencer sort of thing. Treat it more like an old school blog or MySpace page. Make it authentic to YOU, not to an algorithm (because we don’t have any!). MeWe is a place for you to express yourself as you would among your friends. And if you’re here to just have a private account and go to groups for public socialization, that’s great too! You are the one who controls your experience, that’s one of the many beautiful things about MeWe!

What’s a fun fact about you that most of your friends on MeWe might not have guessed?
I used to be in game development! It was actually the career I had chosen after high school. Throughout my teen years, I made a few games and actually had a very large-scale open world adventure game heavily inspired by The Elder Scrolls. I ended up shelving that project because it was just TOO ambitious for one man and I couldn’t feasibly make a living off of the smaller games I made on the side. My choice to work in game dev as a career fell apart shortly after, as I couldn’t afford to move near any studios and I couldn’t seem to get anybody on board with creating a studio with me.

What are the top three favorite MeWe groups you’re in?
Tea Lovers, Techunion and The Constitutionalists

If you can change one thing about MeWe what would it be?
I need an OLED dark mode for my phone! I already use the dark mode theme there but it’d be really nice to have an all-black dark mode!

What are your top three favorite features on MeWe?
Groups are easily #1. I also like the privacy controls: my profile is private, yet I can make specific posts public so people can still get something out of my profile. As for 3… it’s simple, but I really like that we can react to any post with any emojis. It allows people to react how they feel, not just according to 1-5 reaction options.

Have you made connections on MeWe that felt like you knew them in real life?
Definitely. I truly call my MeWe connections my “MeWe friends” because I don’t just feel the typical “follower” relationship like on most social media.

Do you feel like you can express your voice on MeWe and not be afraid of your post being taken down?
Yes, and I’ve felt this way since I joined in 2021! Like I said, it was one of the first reasons I gave MeWe a shot. I feel free to say what’s on my mind, because I do so in a civil way (or at least try to), and I don’t feel like I’ll get shadowbanned for doing so.

Who around you do you think would like to join MeWe?
Honestly, most people I know would like MeWe if they give it a shot! I regularly hear people in my life talk about the negatives of social media, and I try to convince them to give MeWe a shot. Unfortunately, many don’t seem to be comfortable stepping out of what they already know, but I still try!

How would you describe MeWe in one sentence?
A people-first social network designed to give users the freedom to express themselves, and to control who sees those expressions.
