At MeWe, we’ve always believed in empowering users with choice, control, and privacy. As a next-generation social network built on the principles of decentralization, we’ve made significant strides in transitioning to Web3, ensuring that users own their social graph and identities. Now, as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, we recognize its potential to enhance user experiences, streamline operations, and drive innovation in the social media space.

To stay ahead, MeWe has established a dedicated AI Lead to identify and champion AI opportunities that align with our vision. With the rise of cutting-edge AI models like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, O3, Qwen-2.5VL, and more, the AI landscape is shifting rapidly. How does AI fit into MeWe’s roadmap? What opportunities and challenges does it present? And how do we ensure AI serves our users while upholding MeWe’s core values?

To answer these questions and more, we sat down with MeWe’s AI Lead, Marek Zebrowski, to explore the impact of AI on social media, the Web3 space, and what’s next for MeWe in this fast-moving era.

How did you come to work in AI at MeWe?

Marek: My journey at MeWe started in backend engineering—I’ve worked on nearly every corner of the system over the years. One of my early focus areas was content moderation, a constant battle against bad actors like spammers and scammers. That’s where our first machine learning (ML) applications came in. Then, with last year’s rapid advancements in generative AI, we realized its potential to go beyond moderation, and I was eager to explore its possibilities.

What are the biggest AI advancements shaping social networks today?

Marek: Large language models (LLMs) are reaching practical limits due to cost and energy consumption, leading to new architectures like reasoning models and expert ensembles. In the social media space, AI-driven agents present both opportunities and risks—on one hand, they can assist users; on the other, they can manipulate networks. We’re also seeing the rise of personal AIs that act on users’ behalf. Another major trend is the rapid cost reduction of AI models, making previously expensive applications more accessible.

What role does AI currently play at MeWe, and how do you see it evolving?

Marek: Right now, AI is mostly embedded in security and moderation—at our scale, we can’t rely on human effort alone. We’ve also introduced generative AI in small ways, like AI-generated stickers (a fun feature—try it if you haven’t yet!). Looking ahead, we’re researching ways to use AI to help users discover valuable content and create their own. AI could also improve onboarding and daily interactions on MeWe. That said, we remain committed to authenticity and human interaction—we’re not building an AI-driven utopia.

Can AI help fight misinformation on social media?

Marek: AI can help, but it’s a complex issue. Some tools, like Perplexity AI, provide solid answers to general queries, but misinformation is often more about ethics than technology. Many social media users actively seek out misinformation and prefer echo chambers that reinforce their beliefs. Should we use AI to intervene? That’s a difficult question. At the same time, AI itself is a powerful tool for spreading misinformation, and it’s being deployed across all platforms. Like it or not, we have to live with this reality.

How does AI fit into Web3 and decentralized social networks?

Marek: Web3 and AI are both at the forefront of research and innovation. Web3 aims to give users control, but big platforms have an undeniable appeal—they simplify decision-making. AI could bridge that gap by acting as a personal assistant, helping users navigate decentralized platforms. We’re already seeing early experiments like Zerebro and Terminal of Truth, which hint at AI agents managing finances, engaging with others, and more. These might seem niche now, but they showcase AI’s potential in the decentralized world.

Can AI improve privacy and data security in social media? How does MeWe balance AI innovation with user privacy?

Marek: MeWe prioritizes user ownership. We want AI to enhance user experience, not replace it with artificial content. We’re cautious about allowing AI-generated content to flood the platform, making it indistinguishable from human creation. Web3, particularly blockchain, allows users to prove content ownership, but raw blockchain solutions can be complex for non-technical users. That’s where AI can help—by making privacy tools more accessible and user-friendly.

What’s next for AI in social media?

Marek: Generative AI isn’t going away—expect more AI-generated images, videos, and text. Unfortunately, we’ll also see more hyper-personalized targeting (but not on MeWe—we don’t have ads). In response, we may see countermeasures like AI-powered personal assistants guarding our inboxes. In a world flooded with AI-generated content, authentic human experiences may become more valuable and exclusive.

Will AI create or destroy jobs in social media?

Marek: Both. AI has already wiped out some jobs, particularly in content creation, marketing, and low-level social media roles. Photographers, models, and digital artists are all feeling the impact. Software developers, too, may see reduced demand. However, AI will also empower small teams and individuals to tackle projects once thought too complex or costly. While job losses are real, AI also lowers the barrier to innovation—expect an explosion of creativity as new opportunities arise.

What’s the most exciting AI development people should be watching?

Marek: Media attention is usually on big announcements—huge AI funding rounds, company rivalries like DeepSeek vs. OpenAI. But for everyday users, I recommend experimenting with AI as a search tool—it can be surprisingly effective. Change is coming fast, and the best way to prepare is to familiarize yourself with AI capabilities now.

Are there any AI-powered features in development at MeWe?

Marek: Go play with the AI stickers! In the near future, we’re working on tools to help users showcase and create valuable content—possibly a writing assistant or image generator. We’re a small team, so we focus on adding real value rather than chasing AI hype.

What’s one AI trend that’s underrated but has massive potential?

Marek: AI in robotics. Right now, hardware is lagging behind software, but AI could push robotics into new areas that are currently too expensive or difficult. Imagine AI-powered robots handling laundry or performing complex surgeries. If AI progresses in this direction, we could see a future where physical labor is dramatically reduced—but that might be overly optimistic.
